Park Center and Osseo senior high students had the opportunity last month to attend the Latinx Youth Leadership Conference put on by La Oportunidad, a Twin Cities nonprofit, and sponsored by a District 279 Foundation grant. On May 3, more than 50 Osseo Area Schools students and staff participated in this learning opportunity at Augsburg University to develop leadership skills and confidence in advocating for community change.
The Latinx Youth Leadership Conference was focused on sustainability and how the Latinx community can combat climate change. Each year, the conference changes themes and is organized and coordinated by youth participants from the previous year.
Students had the opportunity to spend the day with other Latinx youth from all over the metro and the state to learn more about:
- Latinx cultures and how they intersect with a history of caring for and respecting the environment
- Art and music as a form of activism
- How to advocate for improving and sustaining the environment
